Balmaha is a 60-person village on the east bank of Loch Lomond, the only settlement on that shore, and the gateway to Ben Lomond and the West Highland Way. Most visitors come for a single day of walking and a boat trip; the village itself is a car park, a shop, one inn and a bunkhouse. Rowardennan, 7 miles north up a dead-end lane, holds the Ben Lomond trailhead and the area's bigger accommodation.

Getting around

McColls bus 309 runs roughly every 90 min from Alexandria via Balloch station to Drymen and Balmaha, about 20 min from Balloch. No bus continues north to Rowardennan: that lane needs a car, and parking is limited. Foot-passenger water buses cross the loch, Balmaha–Luss four times a day and Tarbet–Rowardennan once a day.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather and terrain. Conic Hill and Ben Lomond turn icy and cloud-covered year-round, paths are boggy after rain, and there is no mobile signal on much of the Rowardennan lane.
  • No bus north of Balmaha: without a car, Rowardennan and Ben Lomond are a 7-mile walk each way.
  • The Rowardennan lane has almost no parking until the free overflow car park half a mile short of the village; the main car park charges and fills early on fine weekends.
  • Camping March–September is allowed only in designated sites along the shore, not wild on the beach.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the Drymen approach road and worse towards Rowardennan; no Three coverage.
