Bishop's Stortford is a Hertfordshire market town of about 38,000 people on the River Stort, with a conservation area of 105 listed buildings and a Roman-founded core. Most visitors are here for one reason: London Stansted Airport, 5.5 miles east, is under 10 minutes away by train. The town itself is a half-day on foot — a castle motte, a small museum, a market on Thursdays and Saturdays, and a good spread of pubs and restaurants. Two nights is the ceiling unless you are using it as a commuter base for London or Cambridge.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Trains from Bishop's Stortford station run to London Liverpool Street, Stratford, Tottenham Hale, Harlow Town, Stansted Airport, Audley End, Cambridge and Ely. Buses 508/509/510 link the town with Stansted Airport. National Cycle Route 11 and Route 16 pass through. Driving in at peak times is slow; use Jackson Square or Northgate End car parks.
