Aberystwyth is a compact university and seaside town on Cardigan Bay, halfway up the Ceredigion coast and the end of the railway line. Everything in the centre is walkable in 20 minutes, and the two big set pieces — the cliff railway and the steam train to Devil's Bridge — are half-day trips. Two nights covers it; three if you want the coastal walk to Borth or a dolphin boat trip.

Getting around

Walk. The centre, seafront, castle and both stations sit within about 20 minutes on foot. Taxis are plentiful and cheap for the hill. Buses run up Penglais Hill to the university and to Llanbadarn Fawr. Parking in the centre is tight; a Park and Ride runs from Park Avenue with a free shuttle every 15 minutes, Monday to Saturday.

Safety

Very safe for a UK town of its size; the real risks are the sea's undertow, unlit castle ruins at night and boisterous weekend drinking.
  • The castle ruins are best avoided after dark.
  • The Irish Sea has a strong undertow: swim only between lifeguards, and never after drinking.
  • Friday and Saturday nights in summer are loud with students and drinkers.
  • Devil's Bridge parking is very hard in peak season — take the steam train instead.
  • Boat trips and the cliff railway are seasonal: check times before you build a day around them.
