First trip: 3–4 nights in Budapest, then either the Danube Bend as a day trip or 2 nights at Lake Balaton or Eger; Budapest is the rail hub, so every route runs through it.

Not field-verified

Budapest is the country's hub for trains, buses and flights, and most first trips need nothing else for four days. What breaks trips is paying in euros or at exchange booths, unlicensed taxis, and Balaton outside summer when much of the lake shore is shut. Sleep in Budapest, pay in forint, and add one out-of-town base only if the season suits it.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Hungary is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • The currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion at cards and ATMs.
  • Motorways need an electronic vignette (e-matrica) bought before you drive on them.

Etiquette

  • Many Hungarians do not clink beer glasses; clinking wine or pálinka glasses is fine.
  • Greet with Jó napot when entering shops and small restaurants.
  • At thermal baths, bring a swimsuit and flip-flops; some baths require a swim cap in lap pools.
Aug 20 (St Stephen's Day)
National holiday with fireworks over the Danube; central Budapest closed to traffic and packed.
Sziget Festival (August)
Budapest rooms fill and prices rise.
Mar 15 and Oct 23
National holidays; shops close and central Budapest has commemorations.
Dec 24–26
Shops and restaurants close; transport on holiday timetables.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 2/5

  • Currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF, Ft). Cards are widely accepted in Budapest.
  • Carry some forint for markets, small bakeries, public toilets and rural places.
  • Check restaurant bills: a service charge is often already added; if so, no further tip is needed.

Safety

  • Emergency: 112 (the EU number) works everywhere.
  • Use licensed taxis with a yellow plate and meter, or order through an app; avoid touts at stations.
  • Bar scams: strangers who invite you to a bar where the bill is inflated; choose your own venue.
  • Validate public transport tickets; inspectors check and fine on the spot.

Budapest has direct trains to Vienna and Bratislava, and road or rail links to Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Romania.
