Zalaegerszeg is the administrative centre of Zala County, a small city of about 55,000 people in south-west Hungary. It is not on the main Budapest tourist circuit, so it works as a quiet one-day stop on the way to Slovenia or Lake Balaton rather than a destination in itself. The draw is the open-air Göcsej Village Museum, a compact historic downtown and a thermal bath complex on the edge of town.

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Volánbusz runs local buses; buy tickets in advance at the station or newsstands, or pay more from the driver. Taxis are cheap by Western European standards; agree the fare or check the meter.

Watch out

Safety

Zalaegerszeg is a calm small city and violent crime is rare. The real issues are unlit side streets after dark, bicycles on pavements and the usual bar check: ask the total before you sit.
  • Some museums and the Göcsej Museum have had long reconstruction closures: check opening before you go.
  • The train station is about 1 km from the centre; allow 15 minutes on foot.
  • English is less common than in Budapest; a few Hungarian phrases help.
  • Many shops and the market hall close by early afternoon on Saturday and all day Sunday.
