Kőszeg is a small historic town in Vas County, close to the Austrian border and about 20 km from Szombathely. Its old centre is compact and walkable, with Jurisics Castle, a ring of churches and museums, and the Kőszeg Mountains rising straight behind the streets. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Szombathely or Sopron; a night here is quiet and cheap.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Local buses run between the town and Szombathely. Parking in the centre is paid in three zones, roughly Ft 160–250 per hour (check). Trains run only to and from Szombathely, two-hourly, about 30 min.

Watch out

Safety

Kőszeg is a quiet, low-risk town. The real issues are uneven pavements in the old centre, unlit forest paths after dark, and tick season in the Kőszeg Mountains in late spring and summer.
  • Trains serve Szombathely only; there is no direct rail to Budapest or Vienna.
  • Many small museums open by appointment or on limited days: check before you go.
  • The ruined synagogue is closed inside; you can only see it from outside.
  • Some sights sit up in the mountains: wear real shoes, not sandals.
