Harkány is a small Baranya spa town 25 km south of Pécs, built around sulphurous thermal water discovered in 1823 and used for rheumatic complaints since. The town itself is a few streets, a park and a bath complex; the surrounding Villány wine hills, Siklós castle and the Drava wetlands are the reason to stay more than one night. Most travellers come for the spa, not the town.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses from Pécs run roughly every 30 minutes and stop near the spa. There is no train station; the nearest railhead is Pécs. For Villány, Siklós and the Drava villages you need a car, a bike or a local bus — check times the day before.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime spa town; the real risks are summer heat at the baths, unlit roads after dark on the Terehegy edge, and driving after Villány wine tastings.
  • No train station: buses from Pécs are the main link, and evening services thin out — check the last departure.
  • Spa entry, pool hours and any medical-treatment booking rules change by season: confirm on the official spa site before you travel.
  • Many small guesthouses and the Tourinform office take cash only; carry forint.
  • July–August the spa and hotels fill with Hungarian and German repeat visitors: book beds weeks ahead.
