Williams is a small Route 66 town on I-40, 35 miles west of Flagstaff and about an hour south of the Grand Canyon South Rim. It was the last Route 66 town bypassed by the freeway, in 1984, and it now runs on that history plus the Grand Canyon Railway. The historic core is walkable in about 40 minutes; everything else needs a car. Most travellers use it as one night between Flagstaff and the canyon.

Getting around

No public transport. The historic core is walkable; a car is needed for Bearizona, the campgrounds and the Grand Canyon. I-40 runs through town, and Hwy 64 heads north to the South Rim, about 1 h.

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are winter driving on I-40 and Hwy 64, summer lightning and heat at the canyon, and altitude on your first day.
  • Winter snow and ice close or slow I-40 and Hwy 64; carry chains in Dec–Feb.
  • Amtrak's Southwest Chief no longer stops in Williams: the nearest station is Flagstaff.
  • Summer afternoon thunderstorms bring lightning and flash floods on forest roads.
  • Altitude is about 2,060 m: sunburn and breathlessness are common on day one.
  • Book Grand Canyon Railway seats and canyon lodges well ahead for May–Sep and holidays.
