Miskolc is Hungary's third-largest city and the gateway to the Bükk mountains, but its best-known attraction — the cave thermal bath at Miskolctapolca — sits about 5 km south of the centre. The downtown has a walkable main street, a handful of churches and a spa culture; most travellers use it as a 1–2 night stop between Budapest and the Tokaj or Aggtelek regions, or as a base for Lillafüred and Diósgyőr Castle.

Getting around

Trams 1 and 2 both start at Tiszai station; tram 1 runs to Felső-Majláth for Diósgyőr Castle. Bus 2 links the centre to Miskolctapolca (about 30 min), and the narrow-gauge forest train runs from Dorottya utca to Lillafüred (about 40 min). Buy tickets at newsstands or the station; a day pass covers buses and trams.

Safety

Miskolc is generally safe for tourists; the main issues are pickpocketing in busy areas and the long walk between the centre and the spa after dark — use a tram, bus or taxi at night.
  • Tickets bought on board cost more and drivers may not have change — buy ahead.
  • The cave bath and some sights close or change hours out of season: check before you go.
  • Downtown is walkable, but the spa and castle are several kilometres out; plan tram or bus times.
  • Parking in the centre is zone-based with time limits; check the zone sign where you park.
