Nagykanizsa is a border town of about 49,000 in the Somogy-Zala hills, between the western tip of Lake Balaton and the Croatian and Slovenian crossings. It has a compact downtown of squares, baroque houses and small museums, and it works best as a single-night break on the Budapest-Zagreb line or a fuel-and-food stop on the M7. Two nights only if you want the surrounding hills and the Mura river country.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Erzsébet tér, Fő út and Deák Ferenc tér are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Volánbusz runs local buses (buy in advance or from the driver); bus line 18 links the train station with the centre. Taxis are cheap for short hops, and Kanizsabike rents city bikes by the day or week.

Watch out

Safety

A calm small city; the real risks are traffic on the main roads, thin pavements after dark, and summer heat on the M7. Keep the usual city sense about your bag at the station and bus stops.
  • The train station is 1.7 km from the centre: allow 20–25 minutes on foot or take bus line 18.
  • Some museums keep short or seasonal hours and the House of Fine Arts has closed for technical reasons in the past: check before you go.
  • Border queues at the Croatian and Slovenian crossings can add an hour in summer: build slack into any drive south.
  • English is less common than in Budapest; a few Hungarian words help in shops and at the station.
