Nagykanizsa
One night is enough: use Nagykanizsa as a rail or M7 stop between Lake Balaton and the Croatian border, not as a base.
Nagykanizsa is a border town of about 49,000 in the Somogy-Zala hills, between the western tip of Lake Balaton and the Croatian and Slovenian crossings. It has a compact downtown of squares, baroque houses and small museums, and it works best as a single-night break on the Budapest-Zagreb line or a fuel-and-food stop on the M7. Two nights only if you want the surrounding hills and the Mura river country.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Erzsébet tér, Fő út and Deák Ferenc tér are all within about 15 minutes on foot.
