Gödöllő is a 32,000-person town 30 km east of Budapest, built around one building: the Grassalkovich Palace, the summer home of Emperor Franz Joseph and Queen Elisabeth (Sisi). Almost everyone visits it as a half-day trip on the MÁV suburban line from Keleti, or as a stop on the way to Hatvan and eastern Hungary. The town centre is small and walkable; the palace is the reason to come.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: palace, Szabadság tér, town museum and churches are within 10–15 min on foot. HÉV and MÁV both serve the town but stop in different places — HÉV at Erzsébet park, Szabadság tér, Palotakert and the terminus; MÁV at Állami telepek, Gödöllő station and Máriabesnyő. A local bus runs from the station to downtown and on to Tesco roughly hourly; HÉV hops within town cost Ft155.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are pickpockets on the Budapest suburban trains and unlit streets after dark away from the centre. Standard precautions are enough.
  • HÉV and MÁV are separate systems with separate tickets — a Budapest travelcard only partly covers the trip.
  • Palace ticket office closes one hour before the palace; last entry is earlier than you think.
  • Some palace areas (Baroque theatre, bunker, King's Hill pavilion) are guided-tour only and run on limited days.
  • Opening hours and prices change seasonally — confirm on the official palace site before you go.
