Sátoraljaújhely is a small border town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, 82 km east of Miskolc, sitting against the Slovak border. It is a quiet base for the Zemplén hills, the Füzér castle, wine cellars and the Kazinczy heritage sites. Most travellers use it for one night, or as a crossing point to Košice in Slovakia.

Getting around

There is no local public transport. The centre is small enough to walk. Regional buses (Volánbusz) reach nearby villages; taxis are available. A narrow-gauge forest railway runs between Pálháza and Rostalló from mid-March to early November.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are the border paperwork, unlit roads out to the hills after dark, and winter ice on the pavements.
  • The town is on the Slovak border: carry your passport or ID if you cross to Slovenské Nové Mesto.
  • Some sights (Károlyi Palace in Füzérradvány) are closed for reconstruction: check before you go.
  • English is less common than in Budapest; a few Hungarian phrases help.
