Romania is large and its trains are slow, so every extra base costs most of a day. Transylvania carries the typical first trip; Bucharest is the air hub but not the highlight for most. Mountains mean winding roads, bears are a real hazard in the Carpathians, and winter shortens what you can reach.

Safety

  • Bears: keep food sealed, do not stop to photograph bears from the roadside, and follow trail closures.
  • Taxis: use apps or licensed taxis with posted rates; avoid touts at Bucharest airport arrivals.
  • Roads outside motorways are two-lane with slow trucks and risky overtaking; avoid night driving.
  • Stray dogs are less common than before but still found in some areas; keep your distance.
  • Emergency: 112.
