Piatra Neamț is a Moldavian town of about 85,000 people where the Bistrița valley meets wooded hills, 2 hours from Iași and 1.5 hours from Bacău. The draw is a compact old centre with a 15th-century princely court, a Cucuteni pottery museum, cheap minibuses and the Bicaz gorge and Ceahlău massif on the doorstep. It is a working Romanian town, not a resort: sights are small, tickets cost a few lei, and the mountains are the reason to stop.
