Piatra Neamț
Give Piatra Neamț one full day and one night as a stop between Iași and the Bicaz gorge; two nights if you want the Bâtca Doamnei hike or a monastery run.
Piatra Neamț is a Moldavian town of about 85,000 people where the Bistrița valley meets wooded hills, 2 hours from Iași and 1.5 hours from Bacău. The draw is a compact old centre with a 15th-century princely court, a Cucuteni pottery museum, cheap minibuses and the Bicaz gorge and Ceahlău massif on the doorstep. It is a working Romanian town, not a resort: sights are small, tickets cost a few lei, and the mountains are the reason to stop.

Get around
Minibuses (locally called Roznov buses) run the length of the city for a flat 2.5 lei — 2026 estimate, check. Taxis are cheap but the meter is the risk: ask the driver to start it, or agree the fare first. The centre is walkable; the hill trails and Bâtca Doamnei need a taxi or bus plus a walk.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and eye contact; 'bună ziua' by day, 'bună seara' in the evening; avoid: First names with older people before they offer them
- Visiting a home: Take shoes off at the door; bring flowers (an odd number), chocolate or wine; avoid: Even numbers of flowers — they are for funerals
- Churches: Cover shoulders and knees; women may cover their hair in monasteries; stand quietly at the back during services; avoid: Crossing in front of the altar area or photographing people praying
- Conversation: Food, football, travel in Romania and family are safe topics; avoid: Dracula as the country's identity, calling Romanians Slavs, and careless talk about Roma or Hungarians
- Hospitality: Accept at least a taste of what you are offered; thank the host by name; avoid: Refusing all food and drink outright
- Queues and transport: Give seats to older people and parents with children; avoid: Loud phone calls in train compartments
Scams and watch-outs
- Feral dogs, especially on Pietricica hill and the streets around it; do not hike alone at dusk.
- Taxi meters: some drivers do not start them or hide the display. Ask the price before you get in.
- Museum hours are short and close on Mondays; the seasonal 09:00–17:00 / 10:00–18:00 split is worth checking on the day.
- Bâtca Doamnei has no marked trail from the road — ask in Doamna village, and watch the village dogs.
- Mountain weather in the Bicaz area turns fast; carry a shell even in summer.
Piatra Neamț is a low-crime town by Romanian standards; the practical risks are feral dogs on the hills, unlit trails after dark and taxi meters that never start.
