Overview
Sofia's centre is small and mostly flat, and the sights are clustered around the yellow-brick streets between the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and Serdika. Trips go wrong on transport, not distance: unmarked taxis overcharge at the airport, signs are in Cyrillic, and Rila Monastery and Boyana Church are far enough to need a car or a tour. Four clusters cover a first visit; Rila and Plovdiv are trips away from one kept bed.

Scams and red flags
- Unmarked taxis and drivers who approach you at the airport charge several times the normal fare: use the metro, a licensed taxi or an app.
- Currency exchange booths advertise 'no commission' but pay a poor rate: use an ATM or a bank.
- Bars near the centre that add a large hidden charge for drinks or 'hostess' companions: check the menu and the price before ordering.
- Fake police officers who ask to check your wallet: real officers show ID and do not check cash on the street.
