Sofia is a flat, walkable capital: do the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and the Serdika ruins on foot in the morning, keep Vitosha Boulevard for the afternoon, and use the metro from the airport — the mountains are a day trip, not a walk.

The honest verdict

Sofia's centre is small and mostly flat, and the sights are clustered around the yellow-brick streets between the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and Serdika. Trips go wrong on transport, not distance: unmarked taxis overcharge at the airport, signs are in Cyrillic, and Rila Monastery and Boyana Church are far enough to need a car or a tour. Four clusters cover a first visit; Rila and Plovdiv are trips away from one kept bed.

Three mistakes to avoid

Unmarked taxis and drivers who approach you at the airport charge several times the normal fare: use the metro, a licensed taxi or an app.(Scams)

Money and SIM

Budget day: €20–35 (≈ US$25–45) excl. bed
Paying: Cards are widely accepted in Sofia, but small cafés, markets and some taxis prefer cash. Carry euros in small notes; you may still see old lev prices or notes during the changeover, so check what you are paying in.
Cash: Withdraw euros at bank ATMs; avoid independent exchange booths and dark-street machines, and keep €20 (≈ US$25) in small notes for the market and taxis.
SIM: An eSIM before you fly, or a SIM at the airport or a mobile shop with your passport.
