Sfântu Gheorghe is the capital of Covasna County, on the Olt River between the Baraolt and Bodoc mountains, 32 km from Brașov. It is a Hungarian-speaking Székely town: a compact centre of a museum, a Gothic fortified church and a market hall, with the Sugas Bai mountain village and the volcanic lake country above it. Most travellers see it in a day or use it as a quiet overnight between Brașov and the Székely Land.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Local buses run a few lines (1, 2, 3 and 4) between Simeria, Central Park, Ciucului and the railway station; buy a ticket on board. Taxis cross town in 5–10 minutes and are the easy fix for the river-bench shops or a late arrival. A car only makes sense for Sugas Bai, the villages and the lake country; central parking is limited and paid by the hour.
