Suceava was the capital of Moldavia from 1388 to 1564 and is the practical hub of Southern Bukovina: trains, buses and the airport all meet here. The old centre is small and partly rebuilt after the communist years, so most travellers use it as a two-night base for the Seat Fortress and the UNESCO painted monasteries rather than as a destination in itself. Prices are low, the food is hearty, and English is limited outside hotels.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Piața Unirii to the fortress is about 25 min uphill on foot. Local buses (TPL Suceava, lines 2, 3, 4 and 5) link the train station, Burdujeni, the malls and the centre; buy tickets on board. Taxis meter at roughly 1.8 lei/km and Bolt operates in the city. For the monasteries you need a bus, a taxi or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Suceava is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are icy pavements in winter, unlit paths up to the fortress after dark, and unlicensed taxis at the station — use metered cars or Bolt.
  • The old centre was heavily demolished in the communist era: expect 1970s blocks between the historic churches.
  • Buses to the monasteries are infrequent and timetables change; confirm the return bus before you leave.
  • The fortress is closed on Mondays and some interactive exhibits are out of order.
  • Cash is still common in small pensions and village stops; change money in town, not at the airport.
  • Winter brings ice on the fortress path and the stairs.
