Guatemala's highlights sit in a triangle of Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal, but mountain roads are slow and Tikal is 8–10 hours by road from the highlands. Trips break on long bus legs and on staying in Guatemala City. Go straight to Antigua on arrival, use tourist shuttles between the highlands, fly to Flores for Tikal, and check the status of active volcanoes such as Fuego before any hike.

Country rules
- Check entry rules for your passport with Guatemala's Migration Institute or a Guatemalan consulate. Guatemala shares a Central America border agreement (CA-4) with El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, so your permitted stay may count across all four.
- Hike volcanoes (Acatenango, Pacaya) only with registered guides and check eruption alerts; Fuego is highly active.
- Avoid public chicken buses between cities: they are frequent targets of robbery. Use tourist shuttles or private transport.

- Ask permission before photographing people, especially Maya women and children.
- Greet with buenos días; politeness and patience are expected in markets.
- Dress modestly in churches and villages.

- Currency is the Guatemalan quetzal (GTQ, Q). Cards work in Antigua hotels and restaurants; markets, lake villages and shuttles often need cash.

Safety
- Violent crime is high in parts of Guatemala City: transit through it and use app or hotel taxis.
- Robberies on remote trails and roads happen: hike with guides, especially around Lake Atitlán and volcanoes.
- The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 5 km of the Mexican border (from the Pacific up to the Gracias a Dios crossing) and to some towns in Huehuetenango.
- Volcanic eruptions and ash can close roads and the airport; check alerts.
- Swim in Lake Atitlán only near the villages and in calm conditions; afternoon winds (xocomil) make boats rough.
Guatemala borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras (Copán) and El Salvador; shuttles run to all of them.
