The central highlands are one base and a set of guided excursions. Antigua is an hour from the airport, walkable and safe in its centre by day; Acatenango and Pacaya hikes leave from it, and shuttles link it to Lake Atitlán. Do not base in Guatemala City, and do not take public buses between towns.
