Tajikistan is a capital with a short list of easy day trips and a very long road to everything else. The trips that fail try to reach the Pamir Highway from Dushanbe on a week's schedule, or cross a land border that was closed on the day. Dushanbe is the base; the mountains need their own days, permits and weather margin. Only Dushanbe has trip-OS data today.

Country rules
- Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities need an e-visa, and the Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir) region needs an extra permit.
- Carry Tajik somoni in small notes; markets, taxis and tea houses are cash-first, and cards work mainly in hotels and larger shops in Dushanbe.
- Land borders, including those with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, have been closed or restricted at times: confirm the current status before you plan an overland leg.

- Cover shoulders and knees at mosques; women may be asked to cover their hair.
- Remove shoes when entering a home or a prayer hall.
- Accept tea and bread when offered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women.

Safety
- Many governments advise against travel to the Afghan border zone and to parts of Gorno-Badakhshan; check your own government's travel advice before you book and before you leave Dushanbe.
- Photography of government buildings, bridges, the airport and military sites can lead to detention: ask before you photograph.
- Altitude and mountain roads: allow a rest day before going above 3,000 m; do not travel mountain roads at night.
- Emergency: 101 fire, 102 police, 103 ambulance (commonly listed; ask your hotel to call and confirm locally).
Tajikistan is the east end of the Central Asia corridor (planned): Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan connect by flight and, when open, by road.
