First trip: land in Bishkek, spend 2 nights there for the city and a mountain day, then go to Issyk-Kul or Song-Kol only with 4+ spare days; the airport is 25 km out and most flights land at night, so book the first bed before you fly.
Kyrgyzstan is mountains with a small capital at the front door. The trips that fail try to reach Song-Kol, Issyk-Kul and Karakol in a week on shared minibuses over passes. Bishkek is the base for a city break and for Ala Archa day trips; the high country needs its own days and its own weather margin. Only Bishkek has trip-OS data today.

Keep the Bishkek bed; take a day pack to the mountains and come back the same evening.
- Fly in and out through Bishkek; the roads to the high country are slow and weather-dependent.
- Avoid the passes in winter and in the days after heavy snow; drivers decide, not the schedule.
- Book the first Bishkek bed in advance if your flight lands between 22:00 and 06:00.

Country rules
- Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities enter without a visa for a limited stay, others need an e-visa.
- Carry Kyrgyz som in small notes; markets, minibuses and taxis are cash-first, and cards are widely accepted only in Bishkek shops and hotels.
- Most Manas arrivals are at night: message your hotel with your flight number and ask for a driver or a fixed fare before you fly.
Etiquette
- Remove shoes when entering a home or a yurt.
- Accept tea and bread when offered; sit where the host points.
- Dress modestly outside Bishkek; cover shoulders and knees at mosques.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women and children.

Safety
- Some governments advise caution near the Kyrgyz–Tajik border, where armed clashes have occurred; check your own government's travel advice before you book and before you leave Bishkek.
- Mountain weather changes fast: tell your hotel where you are going, carry a warm layer and do not hike alone on high routes.
- Political demonstrations have taken place in central Bishkek; avoid crowds and follow local advice.
- Emergency: 101 fire, 102 police, 103 ambulance, 112 general. Ask your hotel to call for you if you are unsure.
Kyrgyzstan is the middle of the Central Asia corridor (planned): Uzbekistan and Tajikistan connect by flight and, when open, by road.
