Karakol is a town at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul and the main hiking base in the Terskey Ala-Too mountains. It has a wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral and a Dungan mosque. Most travellers reach it from Bishkek by road.

Getting around
Marshrutkas and shared taxis run to trailheads; the town centre is walkable. There is no airport in Karakol; the nearest is Issyk-Kul airport, some way west.
