Base yourself in Karakol for Issyk-Kul hiking and the Altyn-Arashan and Ala-Kul routes; two to three nights covers a hot-spring day trip plus at least one multi-day trek departure.

Karakol is a town at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, the world's second-largest alpine lake, and the main hiking base for the Terskey Ala-Too range. Its wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral (rebuilt after an 1890s earthquake, without a single nail) and the carved wooden Dungan Mosque reflect the town's Russian and Chinese Muslim (Dungan) settler history. Most travellers reach it from Bishkek by road, a route that runs along the lake's northern or southern shore.

Get around

Marshrutkas and shared taxis run to trailheads at Ak-Suu (for Altyn-Arashan) and Jeti-Oguz; the town centre itself is walkable. There is no airport in Karakol; the nearest is Tamchy or Issyk-Kul International, both some way west, so most travellers arrive overland from Bishkek (5–6 h by road).

  • Greeting: Handshake for men; hand on heart; avoid: Ignoring elders
  • Yurt: Enter right foot first, men sit left, women right (traditionally); avoid: Stepping on the threshold or pointing feet at the hearth
  • Bread: Break by hand; avoid: Placing it upside down

Scams and watch-outs

  • Mountain weather can change quickly even in summer; check conditions and avoid the high passes in poor visibility.
  • Carry cash; card acceptance is limited outside the main hotels and trek agencies.
  • Book guides, horses or transport through established local operators, especially for multi-day treks and stream crossings on the Ala-Kul route.
  • Altitude on the Ala-Kul pass (around 3,860 m) can affect unacclimatised trekkers; build in a rest day if you have come straight from low altitude.
