Khorog is the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan in the Pamir mountains, at the confluence of the Gunt and Shakhdara rivers. It is a supply stop for travellers on the Pamir Highway and Wakhan Valley routes. Trips need a GBAO permit.
