Karakul

Stop for one night on the Pamir Highway between Murghab and Sary-Tash: the lake is the only sight, and the village exists for travellers passing through.

Karakul is a one-night stop on the Pamir Highway, a small village beside a large crater lake at 3,900 m. There is no public transport, no bottled water and very few services. You come here to break the drive between Murghab and Kyrgyzstan, not to stay longer.

  • Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
  • Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
  • Tajikistan ↗Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities need an e-visa, and the Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir) region needs an extra permit.
  • Tajikistan ↗Carry Tajik somoni in small notes; markets, taxis and tea houses are cash-first, and cards work mainly in hotels and larger shops in Dushanbe.
  • Tajikistan ↗Land borders, including those with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, have been closed or restricted at times: confirm the current status before you plan an overland leg.

Watch out

Safety

Karakul is remote and high. The main risks are altitude sickness, dehydration and the lack of medical facilities. Bring a satellite phone or personal locator beacon if travelling alone.
  • Altitude sickness: Karakul sits at about 3,900 m. Spend a night in Murghab (3,600 m) first if coming from lower elevations.
  • No bottled water for sale: bring a filter or purification tablets.
  • Very few cars pass daily: hitchhiking can mean long waits even in summer.
  • Shops are hidden among mud houses; ask locals for 'magazin' (Russian for shop).
