Albania is compact on the map but slow on the ground: mountain roads, informal minibuses (furgon) with no fixed timetable and few rail links stretch every leg. Pick three bases, not six. July and August crowd the coast and heat the inland towns; the shoulder months (May–June, September–October) are the easiest planning window.

  • Albania is outside the EU and the Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport before you book.
  • If you drive, carry your licence, rental papers and insurance proof, and expect unlit mountain roads and livestock after dark.
  • Land borders with Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece are used by buses; allow for queues in summer and check that your rental contract allows crossing.

Etiquette

  • A nod can mean no and a head shake can mean yes; confirm with words.
  • Dress modestly in mosques and churches; remove shoes in mosques.
  • Hospitality is taken seriously: accept a coffee or raki offered by a host if you can.

Cash necessity: 4/5

  • Currency is the Albanian lek (ALL). Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants in Tirana and resorts; guesthouses, furgons, markets and small cafés are cash.
  • Some coastal businesses quote in euros; paying in lek is usually simpler and avoids poor conversion.
  • ATMs are common in towns but scarce in the mountains; withdraw before heading to Theth or Valbona.

Safety

  • Roads are the main risk: narrow mountain routes, overtaking on bends and poor lighting; avoid driving after dark outside cities.
  • Summer heat inland (July–August) is strong: plan early starts at Berat, Gjirokastër and Butrint.
  • Hiking in the Alps: go with a map or guide, tell your guesthouse your route and carry water and layers.
  • Petty theft happens in crowded resorts; keep valuables out of sight on beaches.
  • Check your own government's travel advice and the local emergency numbers before you go.
