Sarandë

Give Sarandë 3 nights: one for the town and Ksamil, one full day at Butrint, one for the Blue Eye or a beach. Skip it as a base if you want quiet in July–August.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovin…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Albania ↗Albania is outside the EU and the Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport before you book.
  • Albania ↗If you drive, carry your licence, rental papers and insurance proof, and expect unlit mountain roads and livestock after dark.
  • Albania ↗Land borders with Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece are used by buses; allow for queues in summer and check that your rental contract allows crossing.

Sarandë is the southern coast's transport hub: a horseshoe bay facing Corfu, a promenade that fills every evening, and the fastest route to Butrint and Ksamil. The town itself is a half-day; the value is in what sits within 30 km of it. Come in June or September for warm sea without the August crush.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 25 min. The local bus to Ksamil and Butrint leaves from the roundabout behind the harbour, roughly hourly from 06:30 to 19:30 in season (100–200 lek; frequency and season vary — check). SH81 between Sarandë, Ksamil and Butrint jams badly at sunset in high season, so the bus is often no slower than a taxi.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Butrint National Park

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Local bus from the roundabout behind the harbour, via Ksamil; travel time check

UNESCO site; allow 2 h, 3 h if you read everything. Entry about 1,000 lek — ask for the ticket.

Ksamil

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Same bus line, about 20 min

Small islands you can swim to. Go early; the return bus at sunset is the bottleneck.

Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër)

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car or taxi toward Delvinë, about 25 min, then walk in

No useful public transport; a taxi return is the practical option.

Corfu

overnight

Door to door: Check

Ferry from the port; hydrofoil 25–45 min, car ferry longer

One way about €19, return about €38. Corfu is one hour ahead; bring your passport.

Gjirokastër

overnight

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Bus or furgon from the main bus station

Stone town and castle; better as a night than a rushed return.

Borsh and the Riviera beaches

go

Door to door: About 1 h to Borsh

Car or bus north along the coast

Long pebble beach, far fewer people than Ksamil.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Promenade and Rruga Jonianët

Sea front, walk to everything, ferry 5 min. Loudest at night in summer.

Ksamil

Beach base 15 km south; bus runs in season. Packed in August — book ahead.

Kodra hill (above the port)

Cheaper beds, 10–15 min walk down to the water, some steep lanes.

Rruga Butrinti (south edge)

Hotel strip toward Ksamil; needs the bus or a car for the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Sarandë is a low-crime resort town and the sea is the main risk: currents at the Ksamil channels, no lifeguards on some coves, and sunburn. Keep an eye on your bag on the packed promenade and in night buses.
  • SH81 traffic near Ksamil at sunset in July–August: allow double the time back.
  • Ferry and bus timetables thin out or stop outside summer — confirm at the port or a tourist info office.
  • Beach prices in Ksamil and along the promenade are not always posted; ask before you sit.
  • Some coastal roads and beach access points are closed by private construction gates; check locally before driving to a specific cove.
  • August accommodation sells out weeks ahead and prices jump; book early or shift to June or September.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Sarandë. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep–early Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (crowds, heat, SH81 traffic), Nov–Mar (many places shut) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for CFU ferry and TIA bus arrivals, with last-departure checks and a taxi fallback.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: promenade and port, Kodra hill, the bus roundabout, Rruga Butrinti.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Butrint, Ksamil, Blue Eye, Lekurësi) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal fixtures so summer and shoulder versions of the page can both go green.
