  • Somaliland issues its own visas, separate from the federal Somali government; arrange the visa or an arrival letter through a Somaliland liaison office or a local operator before you fly.
  • Foreigners leaving Hargeisa are usually required to travel with an armed police escort; your hotel or operator arranges it.
  • Read your government's travel advice for Somalia, which has a separate section on Somaliland; some areas, especially in the east, carry advice against all travel.
  • Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.

  • Somaliland is conservative and Muslim; dress modestly (women cover hair, arms and legs; men wear long trousers).
  • Alcohol is prohibited.

Safety

  • Most governments advise against all but essential travel to Somaliland and against all travel to some eastern areas, including parts of Sool and Sanaag: check your own government's Somalia advice before you go.
  • Travel outside Hargeisa only with the required escort, and follow your operator's routing.
  • Do not photograph military sites, officials or government buildings.
  • Consular support is very limited; check how your government would assist you there.
