Subregion

East Africa

Build around one savanna country — Kenya (Masai Mara) or Tanzania (Serengeti) — and add gorillas in Rwanda or Uganda by a short flight, or a beach on Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast; pick the Serengeti or Mara sector by the migration month first. Use the US$100 East Africa Tourist Visa only if your trip is Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda; Tanzania needs its own e-visa and, from October 2026, its own insurance.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.

East Africa's first trip is one safari country plus one add-on, joined by a regional flight. The trips that fail try to drive Nairobi to the Serengeti to Bwindi in ten days, discover that the Mara–Serengeti border is closed to tourists, or arrive in the long rains when half the camps are shut. Choose the month, then the sector of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem the herds are in, then the primate forest. Budget for fees before lodges: park, crater and permit fees — US$200 a day in the Mara from July, US$1,500 for a Rwandan gorilla hour — now weigh as much as the bed. The Horn (Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somaliland, Eritrea) is a separate trip by air, with advice that changes fast.

Entry & visas across the region

Rules differ by passport — check the official page

Tiers below are for most EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports in 2026. The East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100, 90 days, multiple entry) covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda only. Kenya uses an eTA, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and Djibouti e-visas, Rwanda and Burundi visas on arrival, and Eritrea an embassy visa. Tanzania adds compulsory state insurance (Zanzibar since 2024, the mainland from 1 October 2026). Most African passports now enter Kenya and Rwanda without a visa.

  • EATV: apply through the country you will enter first, and enter it first; leaving the three-country bloc (e.g. to Tanzania) cancels it — you then need a normal visa to return.
  • EAC citizens (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo, Somalia) move between member states with national IDs, though Somalia and South Sudan are special cases — check.
  • Yellow fever: Uganda and Burundi ask all arrivals; Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia ask if you arrive from or connect through a risk country — which includes Kenya and Ethiopia themselves.
  • Plastic carrier bags are banned in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda (thin bags); leave duty-free bags on the plane.
  • Several e-visa lookalike sites rank above the official portals; they charge 2–3× and some never deliver.
  • US dollar notes printed before 2013, torn or marked are refused or discounted across the region.

Deep dive

6 min read · 5 chapters

This deep dive explains why eleven countries from the Red Sea to Lake Tanganyika feel connected and yet run on very different rules. East Africa holds the oldest human fossils, one of Africa's oldest Christian states, a thousand-year Swahili trading coast, lake kingdoms that met European explorers searching for the Nile, and, today, both the continent's busiest safari circuit and some of its hardest conflicts. The five chapters follow those layers through to what a traveller meets: an eTA, a park gate that only takes cards, a gorilla permit booked a year ahead, or a border that is closed this month.

1Human origins, Aksum and the Swahili coast1 min

The Rift Valley that runs from the Afar depression through Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania exposes some of the oldest human ancestors ever found: 'Lucy' (about 3.2 million years old) in Ethiopia's Afar, footprints at Laetoli and tools at Olduvai in Tanzania, and Turkana Boy in northern Kenya. For travellers this is the region's deepest layer — museums in Addis Ababa and Nairobi display the finds.

In the first centuries AD, the kingdom of Aksum in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea traded with Rome, India and Arabia through the Red Sea port of Adulis, minted coins and adopted Christianity in the 4th century. Ethiopia's Orthodox church, its Ge'ez script and its rock churches at Lalibela grew from that inheritance, and Ethiopia avoided colonisation except for Italy's occupation of 1936–41.

Further south, the monsoon winds made the Indian Ocean coast a trading world. From about the 9th century, African towns from Mogadishu to Kilwa traded ivory, gold and slaves for cloth and ceramics from Arabia, Persia, India and China; Swahili language and culture and coastal Islam grew from that exchange. Omani sultans ruled the coast from Zanzibar in the 19th century, when caravans pushed inland toward the Great Lakes.

Inland, the Great Lakes region held centralised kingdoms — Buganda and Bunyoro in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi — with royal drums, cattle wealth and dense farming populations. Their societies were very different from the herding peoples of the plains, such as the Maasai, and the pastoralists of the Horn.

2Scramble, colony and independence1 min

Between 1884 and 1900 European powers divided the region. Britain took Kenya, Uganda, Zanzibar and British Somaliland; Germany took Tanganyika, Rwanda and Burundi; Italy took Eritrea and Italian Somaliland; France took Djibouti. Ethiopia defeated Italy at Adwa in 1896 and remained independent, a symbol across Africa. After the First World War, Belgium received Rwanda and Burundi and Britain Tanganyika.

Colonial rule left different marks. Kenya's highlands became a settler colony, which drove the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s. Belgian rule hardened Hutu and Tutsi into fixed ethnic identities, with consequences that led to the violence of 1972 in Burundi and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Railways built from Mombasa and Dar es Salaam set the transport corridors still used today, and Asian traders brought by the railways became a large part of commerce.

Independence came fast between 1960 and 1963: Somalia (1960), Tanganyika (1961), Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda (1962), Kenya and Zanzibar (1963), with Tanganyika and Zanzibar uniting as Tanzania in 1964. Djibouti followed in 1977. Eritrea won independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year war, Somaliland declared itself independent of Somalia in 1991 without international recognition, and South Sudan split from Sudan in 2011.

3Peoples, languages and faith1 min

Four language families meet here. Bantu languages (Swahili, Kikuyu, Luganda, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi) dominate the south and the Great Lakes; Nilotic languages (Maasai, Luo, Kalenjin, Dinka) run along the old Nile corridors; Cushitic languages (Somali, Oromo, Afar) fill the Horn; and Semitic languages (Amharic, Tigrinya) the Ethiopian and Eritrean highlands, written in the Ge'ez script.

Swahili is the region's common tongue: national language in Kenya and Tanzania, official in Uganda and Rwanda, and the working language of the East African Community. English is widely used in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania's tourism; French in Burundi, Djibouti and among older Rwandans; Arabic alongside Somali and Tigrinya in the Horn.

Christianity is the majority faith from Kenya to Burundi and in the Ethiopian highlands, with Ethiopian Orthodoxy the oldest church; Islam dominates the coast, Zanzibar, Somalia, Somaliland and Djibouti, and has large communities everywhere. Ramadan changes daily life on the Swahili coast and in the Horn; Ethiopian fasting days change menus to vegan for much of the year.

Ethnicity is sensitive in different ways: in Rwanda and Burundi, asking about Hutu or Tutsi identity is taboo; in Kenya, it shapes politics; in Somalia and Somaliland, clan structures matter more than tribe. Visitors do best to follow local lead and avoid the subject.

4The Rift, the rains and the migration1 min

The East African Rift splits into an eastern branch through Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania, with its volcanoes (Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Ngorongoro) and soda lakes, and a western branch along Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, holding the deep lakes Albert, Kivu and Tanganyika and the Virunga volcanoes. The Afar depression, among the hottest places on earth, is where three plates meet.

Near the equator, seasons are rainy and dry rather than warm and cold. Most of Kenya, Tanzania and the Great Lakes get two rains: long rains around March–May and short rains around October–December. Ethiopia's main rains fall June–September. The Horn lowlands are extremely hot from May to September. Planning a trip here means planning around rain.

The Serengeti–Mara ecosystem supports the largest land migration on earth: about 1.3–1.5 million wildebeest with zebra and gazelle. They calve on the southern Serengeti plains around Ndutu in January–March, move west and north through the long rains, cross the Grumeti around June and the Mara River into Kenya from about July to October, and head south again with the short rains in November. The exact timing moves with rainfall each year.

Mountain gorillas, just over 1,000 animals, live only in the Virunga volcanoes (Rwanda, Uganda, Congo) and Bwindi (Uganda). Their numbers have risen thanks to tightly controlled tourism: permits cost US$1,500 in Rwanda and US$800 in Uganda in 2026, and a share goes to neighbouring communities.

5The region today: integration and fault lines1 min

The East African Community, revived in 2000, has built a common market, one-stop border posts, EAC passports and free movement for citizens, and has grown to eight members. For foreign visitors, integration is patchier: the East Africa Tourist Visa covers only Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, Tanzania has added its own inbound insurance, and Burundi keeps its border with Rwanda closed.

Transport is modernising. Kenya's standard-gauge railway links Mombasa and Nairobi, Tanzania's electric SGR runs from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma and is being extended west, the Addis Ababa–Djibouti electric railway carries Ethiopia's trade, and Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways connect the region to the world. Mobile money, pioneered by M-Pesa in Kenya in 2007, now runs daily payments from Addis to Bujumbura.

The fault lines are real. Eastern Congo's war draws in Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi; Ethiopia's north has seen repeated fighting since 2020, and in late September 2026 it spread again; Somalia fights al-Shabaab, whose attacks reach into north-eastern Kenya; South Sudan remains unstable. Youth-led protests shook Kenya in 2024–25, and elections in Tanzania (2025) and Uganda (2026) were followed by crackdowns. None of this touches most safari circuits directly, but it decides which borders, flights and regions are open in a given month.
