Rules in force · 4
- Burundi ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Burundian immigration authorities or embassy before booking.
- Burundi ↗Check your government's advice province by province: some areas, including border areas and parts of the west, carry advice against all or all but essential travel.
- Burundi ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry.
- Bujumbura and Lake Tanganyika ↗Advice differs by area: stay within the parts of Bujumbura and the lake road that your own government's advice allows.
Overview
Bujumbura sits on the north-east shore of Lake Tanganyika. The sights are few and simple, the pavements are patchy and cash machines that take foreign cards are rare. The trips that go wrong are the ones that ignore three things: fuel and power cuts, the early dusk (about 18:00 all year) and the advice on where a visitor should not go. Four clusters cover a first visit: the centre, the lakefront museum, the quiet residential hill and the beach road north of town.

- Bring US dollars or euros in clean, recent notes and change at banks or licensed bureaux only; the official and street rates can differ widely, so ask your hotel for today's rate before you change.
Arrive
BJM to the centre: one pre-booked hotel car or airport taxi, 20–35 minutes — the risk is landing with no ride arranged after dusk, not the distance.

- Passes
- No pass. Agree the fare before you get in; hire a driver by the hour for anything beyond the centre.
- Last trains
- No rail. Taxis are few after dark: ask the hotel to book the ride back before you go out.

Days
The centre in the first morning, the lake museum on the second, a beach morning on the last; every long leg is a car, and the last day ends with the bags already in it.
Places
The main market district: go in the morning with small notes, a day pack and a hotel-recommended guide if you want to buy; the old market burned in 2013, so the layout is not verified.
The town's memorial square: twenty minutes on a morning walk from the hotel, with the centre's cafés a few steps away.
A small museum-and-zoo on the lake road with traditional huts and animals; go in the morning, take a car both ways and keep an hour free.
The lake beach north of town: go early, sit at a beach bar or hotel terrace, and swim only where the staff say the water is safe.
Eat
Grilled mukeke (Lake Tanganyika fish), isambaza and brochettes at a centre-ville restaurant: lunch is the safe slot; be back at the hotel before dusk.
Sleep
First-timers: the square, the market and lunch are a walk away; choose a hotel with a 24-hour desk, a generator and a car-accessible door.
Desk: staffed 24h
Quieter streets, restaurants and embassies nearby; a car ride from the square and the lake museum.
Desk: unknown
Survive
Safety
- Petty theft and street crime: keep phones and cash out of sight; use a car after dark.
- Heat: AC or shade stop every 60–90 minutes; drink bottled water.
- Lake Tanganyika holds hippos and crocodiles in places, and bilharzia is present in some shallows: swim only where your hotel or driver says it is safe.
- Emergency numbers may not connect: save your hotel's, driver's, insurer's and embassy's numbers before you go out.
Red lines
- Do not photograph government buildings, soldiers, police, the airport or the port.
- Avoid political gatherings and demonstrations; leave if one forms.
- Ask before photographing people.
Practical
- Toilets: hotels, cafés and the few malls.
- Tap water is not for drinking.
- Power cuts are common: carry a power bank and a torch.
