The honest verdict
Bujumbura sits on the north-east shore of Lake Tanganyika. The sights are few and simple, the pavements are patchy and cash machines that take foreign cards are rare. The trips that go wrong are the ones that ignore three things: fuel and power cuts, the early dusk (about 18:00 all year) and the advice on where a visitor should not go. Four clusters cover a first visit: the centre, the lakefront museum, the quiet residential hill and the beach road north of town.
