Djibouti is small but its landscapes are remote, extremely hot and reached only by 4x4 with a driver or operator. Heat is the main planning constraint: from roughly June to September temperatures are dangerous for outdoor trips. Keep Djibouti City as the base, arrange excursions in advance, and carry more water than you think you need.

Safety
- Some governments advise against travel near the border with Eritrea and parts of the border with Somalia (Somaliland): check your own government's advice before you go.
- Heat stroke is a real risk on excursions: carry several litres of water per person and a spare in the vehicle.
- Do not photograph military bases, ports, the airport or government buildings; several foreign militaries are based in Djibouti.
Djibouti connects to Ethiopia by air and by the Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway; check the current border and train situation before planning overland.
