First trip: 2 nights in Addis Ababa, then fly (not drive) to one or two regions your government's advice allows, 2–3 nights each; the trips that fail try to drive the historic north or the south in a week.
Ethiopia is large and mountainous, and road journeys between regions take full days; Ethiopian Airlines' domestic network is how most visitors move. Security advice changes region by region and has shifted often in recent years, including in parts of Amhara and Tigray, so check your government's advice before choosing where to go. Ethiopia uses its own calendar and a 12-hour clock that starts at dawn: confirm whether times are in local or international format. The main rains fall roughly June–September.

Time math

- Addis Ababa 2 + fly to one region for 2 nights

- 12 days
- Addis Ababa 2 + two regions by air, 4 nights each, + 2 buffer nights in Addis
Country rules
- Check visa and entry rules, including any e-visa, on Ethiopia's official immigration portal for your passport before booking.
- Check your government's advice region by region before booking domestic flights; some areas, including parts of the north, have had advice against all travel.
- Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention (lowland areas), altitude, and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.
- Confirm times in writing: local 'Ethiopian time' counts hours from about 6 am, so 2 o'clock local can mean 8 am.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly, especially at churches and mosques: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes at church entrances, and women cover their hair in Orthodox churches.
- Eat with the right hand from shared injera; do not refuse food offered as gursha (hand-fed mouthful) too bluntly.
- Many Orthodox Christians fast (no animal products) on Wednesdays, Fridays and in long periods before Easter; vegetarian food is easy to find then.
- Ask before photographing people, especially in the Omo Valley, where photographs are often paid for.
- Genna (Ethiopian Christmas, around Jan 7)
- Church services and pilgrimages; Lalibela is packed.
- Timkat (Epiphany, around Jan 19)
- Processions everywhere; hotels in Gondar and Lalibela book out.
- Enkutatash and Meskel (around Sep 11 and late Sep)
- New Year and the Finding of the True Cross; offices close and domestic travel is busy.
- Main rains (roughly Jun–Sep)
- Some roads close and mountain trekking becomes hard.
Money & passes
Cash necessity: 4/5
- Currency is the Ethiopian birr (ETB). Outside large hotels, cash is the norm; ATMs exist in cities but not everywhere.
- Keep your exchange receipts; you may need them to change birr back when you leave.
- Card acceptance is limited to larger hotels, airlines and some restaurants in Addis Ababa.
Before you fly: eSIM before you fly · Visas and entry
Safety
- Security advice changes by region and sometimes at short notice, including for parts of Amhara, Tigray, Oromia and border areas: check your own government's advice before and during your trip.
- Mobile internet has been restricted in some regions at times: carry printed bookings and offline maps.
- Pickpocketing and bag snatching happen in Addis Ababa, especially around Merkato and Piassa; keep valuables out of sight.
- Altitude: much of the north and Addis Ababa are above 2,000 m; rest on arrival and drink water.
- Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Ethiopia; be discreet in public.
Addis Ababa is one of Africa's main air hubs: most of East Africa and much of the continent is one flight away on Ethiopian Airlines.
