Axum was the centre of an empire that traded with Rome, Persia and China for nearly 800 years, and it is still the ecclesiastical capital of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The sights are a tight cluster: the Northern Stelae Field with its granite obelisks and tombs, the church complex said to hold the Ark of the Covenant, and the Dungur palace ruins west of town. Two nights covers it at walking pace; the town is small, cobbled and easy to cross on foot or by bajaj.

Getting around

The centre is walkable and cobbled. Blue bajaj three-wheelers cover short hops; agree the fare first. Minibuses toward Shire pass the Lioness of Gobodra turnoff and the Dungur road. Tourist minibuses cost far more than local transport.
