Destination OS · Museum mornings, giraffes, a safari-flight base
Nairobi Nairobi
Nairobi is a two-night base, not a sight list: land, sleep, do one museum or giraffe morning, and keep the afternoons free for traffic — safari flights leave early from Wilson, across the city from the international airport.

Rules in force · 5
- Kenya ↗Check entry requirements and any electronic travel authorisation for your passport on the official Kenyan government portal before booking; rules have changed in recent years.
- Kenya ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route, including transits.
- Kenya ↗Plastic carrier bags are banned; leave shop and duty-free plastic bags behind before you fly in.
- Kenya ↗Light aircraft to the parks have strict baggage limits, usually soft-sided bags only and a low total weight (often around 15 kg); confirm the limit with your operator and leave a hard case in Nairobi.
- Nairobi area ↗Safari flights leave from Wilson Airport, not Jomo Kenyatta International: confirm which airport your ticket uses and allow for the ride between them.
Overview
Nairobi's sights are few and spread over long, congested roads. The trips that go wrong are the ones that plan two neighbourhoods in one afternoon, walk after dark, or take a safari flight the same morning as an international landing. Five short clusters cover a first stay; a ride-hailing car or a hotel driver joins them, and the last day ends with the bags already in the car.
Fits
- Safari travellers with a night or two in the city
- Museum and wildlife day-trippers
- Early risers
Does not fit
- Walkers who want to explore on foot
- Travellers with a tight same-day connection to a safari flight
- Anyone arriving late without a booked pickup
- 1 days
- Museum Hill morning, then rest
- 2 days
- Museum Hill + Karen and giraffes, mornings only
- 3 days
- Five clusters at a slow pace, or two clusters and a Nairobi National Park drive
- Don't confuse
- Wilson Airport (safari and domestic flights) and Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA, international) are on different sides of the city; check which one your ticket uses.

- KES 3,000–6,000 excl. bed / day
- Mid
- KES 6,000–15,000 excl. bed / day
- High
- KES 15,000+ excl. bed / day
- IC card
- No transit card: ride-hailing apps, hotel cars and taxis. Pay by card or M-Pesa where offered.
- Cash rule
- Keep KES 3,000 in small notes for tips and small shops; withdraw at ATMs inside malls or banks, never on a dark street.
Arrive
NBO to Westlands: one ride-hail car or a hotel driver, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic — the risk is not the distance but a late landing with no pickup arranged and an unlit road at night.
Move
- Default
- Ride-hailing car or hotel driver between clusters; walk only inside a cluster and only by day.
- Passes
- No pass. Fares are shown in the app before you ride; agree a fare first with any street taxi.
- Last trains
- No metro; the commuter rail is not a visitor option. Ride-hailing runs late, but confirm the driver and plate before you get in.

Luggage
- Lockers
- No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
- Forwarding
- No forwarding service: keep the big bag at the Nairobi hotel while you fly to the parks (light aircraft take soft bags only).
- Dead zone
- Late international departures: ask the hotel to hold bags and to keep a shower room; many do for a fee.

Days
Museum morning, a Karen and giraffes day, and a last coffee before the car to the airport; every long leg is a car, and the last day ends with the bags already in it.
Places
The covered market in the CBD for crafts, flowers and produce: go in the morning, agree prices first and carry the phone in a front pocket.
Feed giraffes from a raised platform: about an hour, best at opening before school groups; buy the feed pellets at the gate.
The colonial farmhouse of the Danish writer Karen Blixen in the Karen suburb: a guided visit of about an hour, best paired with a garden lunch a short walk north.
Kenya's main museum: human-origins and natural-history galleries, with the snake park on the same hill. Two to three hours indoors, a good rain or heat plan.
Eat
A local coffee-and-breakfast chain on Westlands Road: an easy first meal after landing, and an air-conditioned rest stop.
A garden restaurant on Karen Road near the museum: lunch between the museum and the giraffes; book ahead for weekends.
Sleep
For an early flight or a bus: central, near City Market, but noisy and not for walking at night.
Desk: unknown
First night: hotels with a 24-hour desk, cafés and malls within a short ride, and the shortest road to the museum; choose a hotel with a named driver rather than a walk-up guesthouse.
Desk: staffed 24h

Red lines
- Do not photograph government buildings, police or the military.
- Ask before photographing people; some will ask for a fee.
- Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Kenya: be discreet in public.
Practical
- Toilets: hotels, malls and museums; carry tissues.
- Tap water is not for drinking; use bottled or filtered water.
