First trip: 2 nights in Kigali, then 2–3 nights near Volcanoes National Park for one gorilla trek, and add Akagera (2 nights, savanna) or Nyungwe (2 nights, chimpanzees) if you have a week.
Rwanda is small and roads are good, so the constraint is permits, not distance: gorilla permits are limited per day and must be booked well ahead through the Rwanda Development Board or an operator. Build the trip around the permit date, sleep near the park the night before, and keep Kigali for the first and last nights. The drier months (roughly June–September and December–February) make trekking easier; the rains make trails steep and muddy.

Country rules
- Check visa and entry rules for your passport on the official Rwandan immigration portal before booking.
- Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route, including transits.
- Plastic carrier bags are banned and can be confiscated on arrival; pack in fabric or paper.
- On the last Saturday morning of each month (Umuganda community work), many businesses close and traffic is restricted; plan transfers around it.
Etiquette
- Do not discuss ethnicity; asking whether someone is Hutu or Tutsi is taboo and can be illegal as 'divisionism'.
- Keep streets clean; littering is frowned on and public spaces are kept tidy.
- Ask before photographing people, and do not photograph government or military sites.
- Kwibuka (from Apr 7, for about 100 days)
- National commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi; the first week is especially solemn, with fewer events and quieter nightlife.
- Umuganda (last Saturday of each month, morning)
- Community work; many shops close and traffic is restricted until midday.
- Rainy seasons (roughly Mar–May, Oct–Nov)
- Muddy trekking trails; permits still run.
Money & passes
Cash necessity: 2/5
- Currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). Cards are widely accepted in Kigali hotels and restaurants; carry cash for markets and rural areas.
- Mobile money (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money) is widely used with a local SIM.
- Park permits are paid online or through operators, usually in advance.

Safety
- Rwanda is one of the more orderly countries in the region; normal city precautions apply in Kigali.
- Some governments advise against travel to areas close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo: check your own government's advice before you go.
- Motorbike taxis (moto) are common and helmets are provided; use them only in daylight and with a helmet.
- Gorilla trekking: keep the minimum distance your guide sets, and do not trek if you have a cold or flu.
Rwanda pairs with Uganda (Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth) by road or air and with Kenya or Tanzania by regional flight; check each country's entry rules and any regional visa for your passport.
