Borama
Borama is a 1–2 night stop in western Somaliland: a highland town with a lively market and a base for the border crossing to Ethiopia. Not a destination on its own.
Borama, capital of the Awdal region, sits at about 1,400 m in the Golis range, 118 km west of Hargeisa on a sealed road. The town has a busy central market, a university and a relaxed highland feel. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from the Tog-Wajaale border crossing into Ethiopia, or as a quiet stop between Hargeisa and Zeila. One night is enough; two if you want to explore the surrounding hills.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
- Somaliland ↗Somaliland issues its own visas, separate from the federal Somali government; arrange the invitation letter for the visa on arrival, or a visa through a Somaliland representative office, before you fly.
- Somaliland ↗Foreigners leaving Hargeisa are usually required to travel with an armed police escort; your hotel or operator arranges it.
- Somaliland ↗Read your government's travel advice for Somalia, which covers Somaliland; in 2026 the UK advises against all but essential travel to Awdal, Maroodi Jeex and Sahil and against all travel to the rest.
- Somaliland ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.

Safety
- No legal alcohol — Somaliland is an Islamic republic.
- The airport (BXX) is not operational; fly into Hargeisa (HGA) and drive.
- Police escort required for travel outside Hargeisa, including the road to Borama — arrange through a local operator before you arrive.
- ATMs are scarce; bring enough US dollars cash for your stay.
