Zeila
Go for 1–2 nights only with an operator-arranged escort and a real interest in medieval ruins; otherwise skip — a full-day 4×4 drive from Hargeisa, few services.
Zeila is a ruined port town on the Gulf of Aden, a few kilometres from the Djibouti border. It was a major city of the Adal Sultanate, and the 1990s civil war left many of its monuments badly damaged. The surviving sight is Masjid al-Qiblatayn, one of the oldest mosques in Somalia, which holds the tomb of Sheikh Babu Dena. Somaliland has been trying to revive visits to the town, but services are minimal and the drive from Hargeisa takes most of a day. Almost everyone comes on a guided trip with a police escort and stays one or two nights.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
- Somaliland ↗Somaliland issues its own visas, separate from the federal Somali government; arrange the invitation letter for the visa on arrival, or a visa through a Somaliland representative office, before you fly.
- Somaliland ↗Foreigners leaving Hargeisa are usually required to travel with an armed police escort; your hotel or operator arranges it.
- Somaliland ↗Read your government's travel advice for Somalia, which covers Somaliland; in 2026 the UK advises against all but essential travel to Awdal, Maroodi Jeex and Sahil and against all travel to the rest.
- Somaliland ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.
