First trip: 3–4 nights in Hargeisa with a local fixer, a day-trip to the Laas Geel rock art, and 2 nights at Berbera on the coast; arrange the visa and escorts before you fly.

Not field-verified

Somaliland has its own administration, visa and currency, while most governments treat it as part of Somalia in their travel advice. In practice, visitors arrange a Somaliland visa through a liaison office or on arrival via a sponsor, and foreigners travelling outside Hargeisa are usually required to take an armed police escort. Keep the trip to Hargeisa, Laas Geel and Berbera, work through a local operator, and read your government's Somalia advice, which covers Somaliland separately.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Somaliland issues its own visas, separate from the federal Somali government; arrange the visa or an arrival letter through a Somaliland liaison office or a local operator before you fly.
  • Foreigners leaving Hargeisa are usually required to travel with an armed police escort; your hotel or operator arranges it.
  • Read your government's travel advice for Somalia, which has a separate section on Somaliland; some areas, especially in the east, carry advice against all travel.
  • Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.

Etiquette

  • Somaliland is conservative and Muslim; dress modestly (women cover hair, arms and legs; men wear long trousers).
  • Alcohol is prohibited.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially women.
Ramadan (moves each year)
Restaurants close by day and business hours shorten.
Coastal summer (roughly Jun–Sep)
Berbera is extremely hot.
May 18
Somaliland's national day; offices close and there are public celebrations.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 5/5

  • The local currency is the Somaliland shilling; US dollars are used for most larger payments.
  • Mobile money (such as Zaad) is used for almost everything locally; with a local SIM, visitors can use it too.
  • International cards and ATMs are not reliable; bring enough clean US dollar notes for the trip.

Safety

  • Most governments advise against all but essential travel to Somaliland and against all travel to some eastern areas, including parts of Sool and Sanaag: check your own government's Somalia advice before you go.
  • Travel outside Hargeisa only with the required escort, and follow your operator's routing.
  • Do not photograph military sites, officials or government buildings.
  • Consular support is very limited; check how your government would assist you there.

Somaliland connects to Ethiopia by air and by road via the Wajaale border; check the border and advice status before planning overland.
