First trip: 3 nights in Trinidad (Port of Spain) for food, music and nature, then 4 on Tobago for beaches and reefs, linked by the short flight or the ferry.

Not field-verified

Trinidad and Tobago is an independent two-island state: Trinidad is large, industrial and busy, while Tobago is small and relaxed. Carnival reshapes the whole year's calendar and prices, and crime in parts of Trinidad means you should plan transport and evenings carefully. The islands are south of the main hurricane belt, so storms are less common than further north.

  • Carnival crowds: carry little, keep a phone on a strap and stay with your band or group.
  • Sun and sea: the sun is strong all year; watch for currents and rip tides on unpatrolled beaches, and swim where locals swim.

Trinidad is the southern end of the Caribbean island chain, a short flight from Grenada, Barbados and the South American coast.
