First trip: one base for 5–7 nights, the west coast for calm swimming or the south coast for nightlife and value, with day trips by bus or car to Bridgetown and the east coast.
Barbados is an independent island small enough to cross in an hour, so a single base works for the whole trip. The calm Caribbean (west and south) coasts are for swimming; the Atlantic east coast is for looking at, not swimming in. Good public buses make it easy without a car, and hurricane season (June–November) is the main planning constraint, though direct hits are less frequent than further north.

Country rules
- Check entry rules for your passport on official Barbados government sources before you fly.
- Camouflage-pattern clothing is illegal for civilians, including children: leave it at home.
- Do not swim on the east (Atlantic) coast: strong currents and rip tides.
Etiquette
- Beachwear is for the beach: cover up in Bridgetown, shops and restaurants.
- Greet people before asking for anything; politeness is expected.
- Cricket matters: a Test match at Kensington Oval fills the island.
- Crop Over festival (Jun–early Aug, ending on Kadooment Day)
- The island's biggest festival; hotels and flights fill for the final weeks.
- Christmas–New Year
- Peak season with the highest prices.
- Hurricane season (Jun–Nov, peak Aug–Oct)
- Storms can close airports and ports for days; ferries and small flights are cancelled first.
Money & passes
Cash necessity: 2/5
- Currency is the Barbadian dollar (BBD), pegged to the US dollar; US dollars are widely accepted.
- Cards work in hotels, supermarkets and most restaurants; carry cash for buses, rum shops and beach vendors.
- Check whether prices are quoted in Barbadian or US dollars before you agree.

Safety
- Traffic drives on the left; country roads are narrow and signs are sparse.
- Petty theft from beaches and cars happens: keep valuables out of sight.
- Sun and sea: the sun is strong all year; watch for currents and rip tides on unpatrolled beaches, and swim where locals swim.
- Hurricane season (Jun–Nov): follow local warnings and your airline; if a storm is forecast, leave early or shelter where your accommodation tells you.
Barbados is the eastern gateway to the Windward Islands, with regional flights to Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada.
