Switzerland runs on its rail, bus and boat network, and the timetable is the itinerary. What breaks trips is cost, mountain weather that hides the peaks you paid to ride up to, and too many bases in too few days. Keep two or three beds, keep mountain days flexible around the forecast, and check whether a Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare card pays off for your route.

  • Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not the EU: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Switzerland is outside the EU customs area: allowances on meat, alcohol and tobacco are strict and checked at borders.
  • Motorways need a vignette (sticker or e-vignette) before you drive on them.

Etiquette

  • Quiet hours at night and on Sundays are observed; avoid noise and laundry in apartments.
  • Punctuality is expected; trains leave on time.
  • Greet in the local language: Grüezi in German-speaking areas, Bonjour in French-speaking areas.
  • Sort and recycle rubbish; many places charge for rubbish bags.

Safety

  • Mountains: check the forecast and webcams, and do not go on glaciers without a guide.
  • Altitude: the highest excursions reach above 3,000 m; go slowly if you feel unwell.
  • Roaming: Switzerland is not in the EU, so EU roaming plans may not cover it; check before you arrive.
