Lucerne is a small, walkable lake city of about 80,000 people at the northwest end of Lake Lucerne, and the gateway to Central Switzerland. The old town takes half a day; the mountains and the lake take the rest. Two nights covers the city and one mountain; three nights adds a second peak or a lake day.

Getting around

Walk. The old town is small and most sights sit within 20 minutes on foot. Buses (VBL) cover the rest; the Transport Museum and Lido are 30–40 minutes on foot or a short bus or boat ride. Overnight guests get a Visitor Card with free Zone 10 buses and trains for the stay — the Transport Museum and the lower Pilatus cable-car station are inside that zone. Bikes rent at the station.

Watch out

Safety

Lucerne is a low-risk city. Watch the lakefront and boat piers for pickpockets in summer crowds, keep an eye on your bags on packed trains, and check mountain weather before you buy a cable-car ticket — cloud can close the view entirely.
  • Chapel Bridge paintings are partly replacements: the 1993 fire destroyed much of the original work.
  • The Museggmauer wall walk is open roughly 1 Apr–1 Nov, 08:00–19:00, and closed over winter.
  • The Pilatus cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad does not run in winter; the Kriens cable car runs all year.
  • Card and mobile payment are near-universal, but small kiosks and some mountain huts still take cash only.
