Lucerne
Luzern
Give Lucerne 2 nights: one full day for the old town and lake, one for Pilatus or Rigi. Skip it as a day trip from Zurich — the trains eat the day.
Lucerne is a small, walkable lake city of about 80,000 people at the northwest end of Lake Lucerne, and the gateway to Central Switzerland. The old town takes half a day; the mountains and the lake take the rest. Two nights covers the city and one mountain; three nights adds a second peak or a lake day.

Get around
Walk. The old town is small and most sights sit within 20 minutes on foot. Buses (VBL) cover the rest; the Transport Museum and Lido are 30–40 minutes on foot or a short bus or boat ride. Overnight guests get a Visitor Card with free Zone 10 buses and trains for the stay — the Transport Museum and the lower Pilatus cable-car station are inside that zone. Bikes rent at the station.

- Best for one night with bags: trains, boats and buses all leave from here.
- Neustadt / Pilatusstrasse
- 5–10 min walk from the station; hotels and the Rosengart Collection, quieter at night.
- Kriens and the suburbs
- Cheaper beds, 10–15 min by bus; the Pilatus cable car starts in Kriens.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; three cheek kisses among friends; avoid: Skipping the greeting in shops
- Punctuality: Be exactly on time; avoid: Running for the train expecting it to wait
- Language: Greet in the local language, then ask for English; avoid: Speaking German in Geneva as a default
- Quiet: Low voices in trains; quiet carriages are marked; avoid: Speakerphone calls
- Money: Keep financial talk discreet; avoid: Asking people's salaries
- Recycling: Separate PET, glass and cans; avoid: Leaving rubbish in hotel or flat bins unsorted
Scams and watch-outs
- Chapel Bridge paintings are partly replacements: the 1993 fire destroyed much of the original work.
- The Museggmauer wall walk is open roughly 1 Apr–1 Nov, 08:00–19:00, and closed over winter.
- The Pilatus cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad does not run in winter; the Kriens cable car runs all year.
- Card and mobile payment are near-universal, but small kiosks and some mountain huts still take cash only.
Lucerne is a low-risk city. Watch the lakefront and boat piers for pickpockets in summer crowds, keep an eye on your bags on packed trains, and check mountain weather before you buy a cable-car ticket — cloud can close the view entirely.
