Huế was the Nguyễn dynasty's capital from 1802 to 1945. Its sights are in two places: the walled Citadel and Imperial City on the north bank, and a string of royal tombs and pagodas spread 5–12 km up the Perfume River. The city is slow and green, its food is the spiciest in the country, and its rain is the heaviest. Trips go wrong when the Imperial City is squeezed into two hours at noon, when the tombs are cycled in 35 °C heat, or when a day is lost to the autumn floods.

- 01The Nguyễn lords ruled the south of Vietnam from this stretch of river from the 1600s; in 1802 Gia Long, having won the civil war with the Tây Sơn, made Huế the capital of a unified country. His Citadel, laid out by geomancy against the Perfume River and Ngự Bình hill, is the frame of the city you see.
- 02Thirteen Nguyễn emperors reigned until 1945, most of them after 1883 under a French protectorate. Each chose a valley upriver for his tomb, so the dynasty's history is spread across the hills: Minh Mạng's formal axis, Tự Đức's lake of poems, Khải Định's concrete and mosaic. Bảo Đại abdicated at the Noon Gate in August 1945.
- 03The 1968 Tết Offensive turned Huế into the longest urban battle of the war: about four weeks of house-to-house fighting, much of the Imperial City destroyed and thousands of civilians killed, including those executed during the occupation. Bullet scars are still on gates and walls. UNESCO listed the monuments in 1993 and restoration continues.
- 04Since January 2025 Huế is a centrally run city, no longer part of Thừa Thiên Huế province, and since July 2025 addresses use merged wards rather than districts (check). It keeps a strong Buddhist culture, UNESCO-listed court music (nhã nhạc), and a royal cuisine tradition of many small, finely made dishes.

More background
The city has two halves. North of the river is the Citadel, a square of walls and moats 10 km round, with quiet residential lanes, lotus ponds and garden houses inside and the palace at its heart. South of the river is the French-built town with the hotels, food streets, schools and the university. Upstream, the tombs sit in pine hills where each emperor chose his own view of water and mountains, and the villages between them make incense, conical hats and rice paper.
Huế is a Buddhist city more than any other in Vietnam. There are dozens of working pagodas, many families eat vegetarian on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, and the monks of Thiên Mụ and Từ Đàm played a public role in the 1960s. Expect temple drums at dawn and vegetarian kitchens that are packed on lunar days.
The food has two lines. The Nguyễn court kitchen cooked many small, finely carved dishes for each royal meal, arranged to look like phoenixes or flowers; Tự Đức is remembered as the most exacting diner. The street kept the habit of small portions, which is why bánh bèo comes in saucers and snack cakes come in sets. The chilli is the city's own: Huế cooks hotter than anywhere else in Vietnam.
The rain shapes the calendar. From September to December the mountains behind the city pull down some of the heaviest rain in the country, the river rises, and low streets on both banks can flood overnight. The dry, hot months from May to August bring a wind off the Lao hills that pushes temperatures past 35 °C. The good window is short: February to April.

Addresses: official addresses use the post-2025 ward names, but everyone navigates by street and house number. "Kiệt" is Huế's word for a lane (elsewhere "hẻm" or "ngõ"): 29/5 Hùng Vương means house 5 in lane 29 off Hùng Vương. Put the full string in the app and screenshot the pin.
In flood season low streets on both banks and roads to the tombs go under water, sometimes for a day or two. Ride-hailing stops, taxis refuse the worst streets, and boats stop running. Keep water, snacks and a charged phone, and do not wade through moving water.

Deep dive
Huế was the last royal capital of Vietnam, and the city is still arranged around that fact: a walled Citadel laid out by geomancy on the north bank, a French town on the south bank, and emperors' tombs in the pine hills upriver. This deep dive reads it in layers — the Nguyễn court, the colonial century, the 1968 battle and the slow restoration — so that a morning at Ngọ Môn and an afternoon at a tomb connect into one story.

The land along the Perfume River passed from the Chăm kingdom to Đại Việt in 1307, part of a royal marriage settlement, and for three centuries it was a frontier province. From the late 1500s the Nguyễn lords, nominally servants of the Lê court in the north, built their own state here and pushed it south towards the Mekong. In 1687 they moved their seat to Phú Xuân, the village that became Huế, and Thiên Mụ Pagoda, founded in 1601 by the first lord, became its spiritual landmark.
The Tây Sơn rebellion swept the Nguyễn aside in the 1770s, but a surviving prince, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, fought back for 25 years with help that included French volunteers. In 1802 he took the throne as Gia Long, ruler of a country stretching from the Chinese border to the Gulf of Thailand, and chose Huế as its capital. His successors Minh Mạng, Thiệu Trị and Tự Đức built a court on a Chinese model, with examinations, rites and a ministry system, and filled the Citadel with palaces.
From 1858 France attacked the south, and in 1883–1884 two treaties made central and northern Vietnam protectorates. In 1885 the regent Tôn Thất Thuyết launched a night attack on the French garrison beside the Citadel; it failed, the palace was looted, and the boy emperor Hàm Nghi fled to the hills to lead the Cần Vương, 'aid the king', resistance. Later emperors reigned under French supervision. The last, Bảo Đại, abdicated at Ngọ Môn gate on 30 August 1945, handing a sword and seal to the Việt Minh.
Huế sat just south of the 17th parallel after 1954, a southern city close to the border. In May 1963 government troops fired on a Buddhist crowd outside the Huế radio station during the Buddha's birthday celebrations, starting the crisis that brought down the Diệm government. In the 1968 Tết Offensive northern and Việt Cộng forces seized most of the city on 31 January; American and South Vietnamese troops retook it street by street over about four weeks. Much of the Imperial City was destroyed, and the civilian dead numbered in the thousands, including those executed during the occupation and found later in mass graves.
Northern forces took Huế again in March 1975. Restoration of the monuments began in earnest after UNESCO listed them in 1993, and court music (nhã nhạc) joined the intangible list in 2003. On 1 January 2025 Huế became a centrally run city, the sixth in the country, taking in the whole of the former Thừa Thiên Huế province; the population of that area is a little over one million (check).

The Citadel is a town inside walls, about 10 km round, with ten main gates, a moat and bastions in the Vauban manner. Only the palace at its centre was royal; the rest held ministries, barracks, granaries and the houses of officials. Today it is a residential district of lanes, gardens, lotus ponds and schools, where many families still live in houses behind spirit screens. Tịnh Tâm lake, once a royal pleasure garden, is now a neighbourhood pond.
Just east of the walls, Gia Hội and the Đông Ba market area grew as the commercial town. Chinese traders settled along the canal and built assembly halls on Chi Lăng street, and the old shophouses there are among the few in the city older than the 20th century. Hến islet, in the river opposite, is a village of clam fishermen and the home of cơm hến.
The south bank was laid out by the French from the 1880s as the administrative town: the Résident Supérieur's offices, schools, the hospital, the railway station and villas on wide streets. The Quốc Học school (1896) educated a generation of nationalists who later led both sides of the war. The streets around Phạm Ngũ Lão became the backpacker quarter in the 1990s.
West of the Citadel, Kim Long was the village of court families and mandarins. Its garden houses (nhà vườn) are walled compounds with a wooden house, a pond, fruit trees and a screen at the gate to block bad influences; a few open to visitors. East along the river, Vỹ Dạ has more of them, and poets wrote about its moonlit gardens. Upriver, the tomb villages make incense, conical hats and rice paper for the city.

Gia Long's planners sited the Citadel by geomancy. It faces south-east, towards the river and Ngự Bình hill, which serves as a screen, with two islets in the river as the dragon and the tiger that guard the approach. The palace sits on the central axis: Ngọ Môn gate (1833), the Thái Hòa throne hall, then the Forbidden Purple City where the emperor lived. Roofs are yellow-glazed for the emperor, with dragons on the ridges, and the halls are timber frames on stone bases, built to be repaired and rebuilt.
Each tomb follows the same programme in a different key: a courtyard of stone mandarins, elephants and horses; a stele pavilion carrying the emperor's biography; a temple for his cult; and the sealed burial mound. Minh Mạng's is strictly symmetrical along a 700 m axis through lakes and gates; Tự Đức's is loose and lyrical, a retreat with a lake and pavilions where he wrote; Khải Định's, finished in 1931, is grey concrete outside and a room of mirror glass and porcelain mosaic within.
The later sites show the French century arriving inside royal taste. Đồng Khánh's temple mixes red lacquer and carved wood with French floor tiles and painted glass. An Định Palace, rebuilt for Khải Định from 1917, looks like a French villa with Vietnamese ornament and painted wall panels. Trường Tiền bridge (1899), the station and the south-bank schools are plainly colonial, and Phủ Cam cathedral, completed in the 1960s, is modernist concrete.
War and weather decide what survives. Fighting in 1947 and 1968 destroyed most of the Forbidden City, and the tropical climate eats timber, lacquer and paint. Restoration since the 1990s rebuilds halls on their old foundations, using court archives and old photographs; Kiến Trung palace was reopened in 2023 and the Thái Hòa throne hall after a long restoration (check). Where nothing has been rebuilt, grass and foundations show the plan.

Huế cooks two cuisines. The court kitchen fed emperors who expected many small dishes at every meal, finely cut, carved and arranged to look like birds or flowers; Tự Đức is remembered as the most demanding diner. The street kitchen borrowed the habit of small portions: bánh bèo in saucers, bánh nậm and bánh lọc in leaves, served in sets of several kinds. Royal-cuisine dinners today reconstruct the court side for visitors; the street side is what the city eats.
Bún bò Huế is the city's soup: round rice noodles in a beef broth scented with lemongrass and fermented shrimp paste, with beef shank, pork hock and cubes of blood. It is richer and hotter than phở and eaten for breakfast. Cơm hến, baby river clams on cold rice with crackling, peanuts, herbs and chilli, started as a poor fishermen's dish on Hến islet and became a city favourite.
The Buddhist tradition gives Huế more vegetarian kitchens than any other Vietnamese city. Many families eat chay on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, pagodas cook for their communities, and restaurants make mock-meat versions of every local dish. Sweet soups, chè, are the evening habit, with a menu of lotus seed, beans, jellies and the famous tapioca-wrapped roast pork.
Huế food is the spiciest in the country, and locals explain it by the wet winters. Chilli paste sits on every table. The newest local invention is cà phê muối, salted-cream coffee, which spread from a Huế café in the 2010s to the rest of Vietnam.

The Huế Festival began in 2000 as a biennial celebration of the old capital, with court music, reenacted royal rites such as the Nam Giao sacrifice to heaven, lantern nights on the river and street parades. Since 2023 the city has presented it as a year-round programme with a main edition in even years (check). A Traditional Craft Festival alternates with it.
Religious festivals follow the lunar calendar. Buddha's birthday, on the 15th of the fourth lunar month, fills the river with floating lanterns and the streets with processions from the pagodas. Điện Hòn Chén, a temple upriver to the goddess Thiên Y A Na, holds festivals in the third and seventh lunar months with decorated boats and spirit-medium rituals.
Tết brings rites at the Imperial City and crowds at Thiên Mụ; Mid-Autumn brings lanterns and lion dances. The flood season is its own kind of calendar event: the city is organised for it, with boats in the lanes and markets that reopen as soon as the water drops.

Huế is slow by Vietnamese standards. Traffic is lighter, evenings end early, and people are known for a soft, formal manner and a strong accent. The university and hospitals make it a city of students and doctors, and bicycles are still common inside the Citadel. Rowing crews and fishermen share the river at dawn.
Weather sets the rhythm. The hot season brings the dry west wind, and life moves to early mornings and evenings on the riverbank. The rainy season brings weeks of grey, and floods that the city takes in its stride: furniture goes upstairs, boats appear in the streets, and cafés reopen as soon as the water falls.
Becoming a centrally run city in 2025 has brought new roads, riverside parks and plans for the wider area, from the lagoon to the mountains. The heritage core is protected, so growth goes to the edges, and the Citadel keeps its low, green scale.
