North bank: the Citadel with the Imperial City, and Đông Ba Market at its east corner. South bank: hotels, food streets and the station. Upstream west and south: Thiên Mụ and the tombs, 4–16 km out. East: Vỹ Dạ, then the lagoon and the sea.

About these names

Since January 2025 Huế is a centrally run city, and since July 2025 official addresses use merged wards instead of districts (check). Drivers still use street names and old area names; search by street and house number.

  • Imperial City (Đại Nội): The palace enclosure inside the Citadel; go at opening. Suits: Half a day.
  • Citadel lanes (Trong Thành): Garden houses, lotus ponds (Tịnh Tâm lake), few restaurants; walk to the palace gate. Suits: Quiet homestays, cyclists. Price band $$.
  • Đông Ba and Gia Hội: Market, riverside, Hến islet for cơm hến, old Chinese assembly halls on Chi Lăng street. Suits: Market mornings, old shophouses.
  • South bank (Lê Lợi, Phạm Ngũ Lão) (Bờ Nam): Hotels with lifts, food streets, bars, the dragon-boat pier, 10–15 min walk over the bridge. Suits: First visits, late arrivals. Price band $$.
  • An Cựu and Phủ Cam: An Định Palace, Phủ Cam cathedral, local eating streets; a ride from the hotels. Suits: A short afternoon.
  • Kim Long: Old aristocratic village west of the Citadel on the way to Thiên Mụ; quiet and leafy, far from food at night. Suits: Garden-house stays, cyclists.
  • Thiên Mụ: Pagoda on the river, 4 km west. Suits: Early morning or by boat at dusk.
  • Tomb valley: Tự Đức and Đồng Khánh (6 km), Khải Định (10 km), Minh Mạng (12 km); incense stalls on the way. Suits: A morning by car.
  • Vỹ Dạ: East along the river; a few boutique stays and fish restaurants. Suits: Riverside garden houses, seafood.
  • Thuận An and the lagoon: Beach and lagoon 13–20 km east; not a base, and the sea is rough in the rains. Suits: Sunset or a seafood evening.
