Huế, Đà Nẵng and Hội An sit on 130 km of coast, with the Hải Vân Pass as the wall between them. Most itineraries waste a day backtracking to Đà Nẵng's airport. Enter at one end and leave at the other: HUI in, DAD out (or the reverse). The pass is the scenery; a private car with stops or the coastal train does it justice, a sleeper bus through the tunnel does not.

The pass climbs to about 500 m on a spur of the Trường Sơn range. A gate built under Minh Mạng marked the old border between provinces; the road tunnel beneath it opened in 2005, leaving the pass road to sightseers.
